Charles H. Morris Sr., CEO and president of Morris Multimedia Inc., announced April 16 the sale of The Times (Gainesville, Ga.) and The Poultry Times to Metro Market Media, a newly formed company owned by his son, Charles H. Morris, Jr.

In a separate transaction, Morris Sr. also sold from an affiliated company the Forsyth County News (Cumming, Ga.) and Dawson County News (Dawsonville, Ga.) to Morris Jr. and MMM.

The Virginian-Pilot and Style Weekly win VPA's highest awards 4/17/18

The Virginian-Pilot and Style Weekly were named Saturday as the recipients of the Virginia Press Association's awards for journalistic integrity and community service, the organization's highest award.

The Virginian-Pilot won in the daily category for Tim Eberly's series on Virginia's "three-strikes law" which denies felons the opportunity for parole. Eberly also was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Investigative Reporting, announced yesterday for this same series.

Newsletters can be gold. But they require a little more digging than most publishers are doing today.

A lot of publishers use newsletters to push their news content out to readers each day, reaching an audience that wants the news to come to them rather than buying a paper or going to a website. A few also do calendar-oriented newsletters, telling readers about things to do for the weekend.

Those are a good start (and if you aren't doing both of these yet, you should get going), but that isn't where the gold is.

Newsletters also are a great way to create niche products and to test new concepts.

The Akron Beacon Journal's owner, Black Press Ltd., recently announced the sale of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Akron Beacon Journal and its Ohio.com website to GateHouse Media, which owns multiple publications in Ohio including The Columbus Dispatch and The Canton Repository. Sound Publishing Holdings Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Black Press Ltd., bought the Beacon Journal in 2006.
